Effective ranch management requires an intimate knowledge of the irrigation system, hay production, fence and building maintenance, livestock care, and security, all with the support of a significant fleet of equipment. Last Dollar Ranch is one of two ranch properties that make up the Double Shoe Cattle Company. The other, Centennial Ranch, is located nearby on the Uncompahgre River north of Ridgway. Currently, Double Shoe Cattle Company runs some 75 cow/calf pairs with Last Dollar Ranch serving as the summer grazing site for a portion of this herd. |
Water is absolutely essential to a working cattle ranch. Excellent high priority water rights allow the owners to draw water from Leopard Creek as it collects snowmelt from the nearby Sneffels range. This provides ample irrigation and domestic water. |
